The model
Affiliate marketing is a referral model.
An affiliate introduces a product or service to people who may find it useful. The business or affiliate network gives the affiliate a tracked link. When a person follows that link and completes an action that qualifies under the programme's terms, the affiliate may receive a commission.
The customer still chooses whether to act, the merchant still delivers the product or service, and the programme still decides how referrals are attributed and paid. Your work sits in the middle: useful context that helps the customer evaluate the option.
- The merchant owns the offer, checkout and customer fulfilment.
- The affiliate creates attention, context and a reason to explore.
- The customer makes the decision and should understand what they are choosing.
Possible commission
A qualifying action may lead to a commission. A click, a sign-up or a sale does not guarantee payment unless it meets the programme's rules.
